Vendor Spotlight: A Conversation with Something Borrowed Blooms
We LOVE our couples and part of that love is constantly being on the lookout for ideas and new vendors/services to even further make your engagement and wedding day experience ah-mazing! We recently worked with Something Borrowed Blooms on a beautiful wedding at the Tide’s Inn located in Irving, Virginia. Laken & Lauren, the Owners of SBB sat down with us over a digital cup of coffee and shared all about their dream of creating a beautifully, unique service that would be loved by all Brides.
Swoon ready, silk florals
SBB is a custom designed, silk floral rental company. We were so impressed with not only the look and feel of the florals our bride used, but the business idea and service overall. We couldn’t help but dive in to learn more about them and the face behind these beautiful florals, to bring some magic your way, too. Co-Founder, Laken Swan, took on the challenge of our crazy blog idea and answered some questions we had. And, because we care so much about the personal stories and experiences behind what inspires a business, we were sure to speckle in some fun, get to know you questions, too.
An interview with Something Borrowed Blooms
What inspired you to get started in creating Something Borrowed Blooms?
“About five years ago, my business partner and I had a bug to try something new and start a business. At the time, we weren’t quite sure what we wanted to do, but we were inspired by Rent the Runway and the adoption of the share trend. We loved the concept of renting an item that’s only used once or for a limited time to minimize the investment cost. We started looking into different industries to find where that concept would make sense. At the time, I was in the season of life where I attended weddings OFTEN. I noticed Brides looking for ways to save money on flowers either by cutting back on their selection of fresh floral or DIY silk florals. At that point, things became very clear…We knew we had an idea worth pursuing – Renting Silk Wedding Flowers!”
What are some common misconceptions you hear and want to clear up when it comes to renting florals?
“I think the industry perceives our product/service as a budget conscious alternative to brides, but we are so much more than that! Yes, we serve a fair share of budget focused brides and we’ve very proud of savings we’re able to provide them. But we also serve brides who aren’t solely focused on budget, rather, they are just looking for smarter ways to spend their money. For some brides that’s allocating more money on the honeymoon of their dreams or a designer dress she always envisioned herself wearing. We also have many brides that value the sustainability of our blooms and that eco-friendly benefit we provide is what ultimately makes their decision to rent.”
What would you say are the top reasons you would share with a newly engaged bride or groom as to why they should rent?
“It makes sense for so many brides. I always recommend making a list of your wedding priorities. If flowers aren’t at the top of your list… you should consider renting! Spend money in the areas that are most meaningful to you. That may be a great band or an over the top menu, or again an amazing honeymoon to spend your weeks as newlyweds. Whatever is most importation is where you should put the most focus and budget. Don’t overextend yourself in other areas that may leave you with remorse later.”
Who in your life encourages you to keep going and pushes you to reach for more?
“Lauren and I are both moms with young kids, which motivates both of us to keep going. It’s important to me to show my kids the value of hard work and what it can bring to life.”
What is your go-to quote, Podcast, or musician you refer back to keep yourself motivated?
“I love Podcasts! Being a mom of three, it’s hard for me to find time to read. Podcasts fill that void. Some of my favorites are Pursuit with Purpose, She’s Making and Impact and The Strategy Hour. I do jump around a lot… I like a mix of different resources and content.”
Any other tidbits you would like to share?
“We’re proud to offer a product and service that is truly revolutionizing the wedding industry. We continue to receive the kindest and most genuine response from our brides, often thanking us for introducing this alternative. We call these reviews our “Love Letters,” but in all reality it’s our motivation to keep pressing forward to further connect with more brides.”
“Love Letters”…rings a bell! 😉 We are so thankful for Laken & Lauren for pursuing a call placed on their hearts. Something Borrowed Blooms is such a needed and thoughtful asset to the wedding industry. Thank so much for chatting with us, Laken! We can’t wait to photograph more of your beautiful blooms soon.
