the inside scoop from real wedding photographers!

Aside from, “Can I Have your Instagram handle?”, there are so many important things to ask your wedding photographer before hiring them. Most often, unless you are in the wedding photography industry yourself, it is hard to realize what exactly these go-to questions should be. But we’ve got your back!
We put your thinking caps on together to take the guesswork out of it all for you. We have compiled the top questions you should be asking a wedding photographer before you hire your wedding photographer!

1. As our wedding photographer, do you carry enough insurance to cover the venue we have selected?

Most wedding venues require all wedding vendors the couple select to be licensed and insured. On top of this requirement, the venue will likely also have a specific minimum sum amount of coverage for each vendor. This number should be listed in the proposal and/or the contract you sign with your venue. If not, ask your venue contact and ensure your wedding photographer to be has at least this amount of coverage.

2. Do you bring multiple camera/lenses on our wedding day?

This is a hot topic most especially for destination wedding locations like Florida. It’s important that the wedding photographer you select brings multiple lenses. Why? Specific lenses capture specific moments and times of the day far better than others. Want to be sure your detail shots are captured just as beautifully as your sunset portraits? Ask your photographer this question.  Additionally, what happens if the one lens your photographer has breaks, or drops or just stops working?  If your professional doesn’t have multiple lenses and backups, this may be a considering in your big decision.

3. What is your backup plan if you get sick on our wedding day? Do you have an assistant wedding photographer?

Just like you want to have the utmost trust and faith in your wedding photographer, you also want to be sure you have that same trust and faith in their backup photographer, too. Ask to see samples of their backup photographer’s work, too.  This is one area where having multiple photographers in the same company is a great way to guarantee that there will be backup but also that the style and aftercare will be the same too.

4.  How do you backup/store images before delivery?

As wonderful as your photographer’s gear may be, it is so important to know the multiple sources they store your cherished images on before they are safely delivered to you and your new spouse. What if the prospective photographer stores those images on their camera, and that camera gets scooped up on their flight home? Yikes. It’s so important to know that your photographer stores your photos on multiple sources. Get this question answered before and enjoy those peaceful newlywed snoozes until your photos are safely in your hands.

But what if they say yes? Appreciate their honesty and understand that (most often) if this has happened, it has been a freak accident incident. Feel free to ask more questions as needed. And always, go with your gut!
