The Table Race: The Reception Tradition You Never Knew You Needed

Ah, the Table Race. The answer to so many of our prayers: both wedding vendors, wedding guests, and couples alike. Amidst the hustle, bustle and boogie on the wedding reception dance floor, time and time again we hear wedding guests stress over their lack of snapshots with the newlyweds. Because while every loved one adores seeing photos of the big day, everyone wants a photo that says, “Look! I was there and it was wonderful!”. Plus, of course, who doesn’t desire the coveted social media post celebrating your loved ones recent nuptials?! We have been there. We get it. And with that? We’ve got you!

Created by the wedding DJ and entertainment world, we have been introduced to the Table Race. And as your trusted wedding photographers and wedding planners, we encouirage you to pop open your planning binder. You’re going to want to write this down ๐Ÿ˜‰ Below, we are sharing all the deets on this game changing reception game. Let’s dive in together!

It’s All Just Love & (Table) Games ๐Ÿ˜‰

In short, the Table Race is a game where your DJ plays two (preferably upbeat) songs while you and your new boo hustle beside each guest table as guests capture selfies (and your photographers capture some really epic candids! ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) alongside you both. We love this tradition.ย It solves multiple problems!

  • Having your DJ play this game in the timespan before the dance floor opens up is the perfect way to flow through any awkwardness. So many folks are shy dancers. But trust us, they want to dance! Having you right there at each table, giving quick hugs and pumping everyone up, is the perfect way to break the ice and get everyone out of any bubbles they may have. Packed dance floor, here you all come!
  • All of your loved ones will get their coveted shot with the stars of the evening: you and your spose. And while we love professional photographs (we may be biased… ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) there is just something about silly selfies that are priceless. Both your loved ones and you will cherish not just these silly photos, but the quick, fun moment you shared before the party began.

Ready to write this into your timeline?

Wahoo! Here are some notes to consider:

  • Be sure to communicate this with all of your wedding vendors as far ahead of time as possible. Your wedding photographer, planner, videographer, DJ, especially, but really, every single vendor should be aware of this. Be sure your planner and DJ have this written in as a prominent piece on your wedding day timeline.
  • Like we said above, upbeat songs are best! It helps keep everyone moving quickly, and brings in the party vibes.
  • Map out your route with your spouse and vendors beforehand. This ensures there won’t be any flustered stalls, and helps you tackle each table as quickly and smoothly as possible.
